THE RHEMA WORD FOR TODAY
SEPTEMBER 30, 2022.
TOPIC: SONGS OF PRAISE II
BIBLE READING: PSALMS 89:24-37
VERSE FOR MEDITATION: PSALMS 36:5 NKJV
Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
We come to the end of this journey of exploring on the faithfulness of God. And we are sure that you can judge God faithful and rely on His faithfulness.
Songs of praise is not just an attempt to explore God’s faithfulness in the book of Psalms, but it is also an attempt to stir up a heart of thanksgiving and rejoicing. The Samaritan who was also among the ten lepers that Jesus instructed to go show themselves to the priests, came back to thank Jesus after noticing that he was cleansed. And what was Jesus’ response? “Your faith has made you well.” (Lk. 17:11-19). Could it mean that those other nine lepers were not completely made well or cleansed?
In Acts 16, after Paul and Silas were being thrown and locked up in prison, the Bible says that they sang songs of praise to God and they experienced a miracle there. A heart of rejoicing brought this!
I’m sure many will act like Abraham after today, “who, contrary to hope, in hope believed… according to what was spoken… And not being weak in faith… He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was able to perform.” (Rom. 4:18-21).
What strengthened his faith was a heart of thanksgiving and rejoicing.
Psalms 23:6 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” Do you understand what that means? It means, “without doubt” or “no matter what may happen goodness and mercy shall pursue you all your life.” And if the goodness of God is God’s grace and favour, that is grace is what you don’t deserve, and favour is what you deserve. So we can paraphrase it in this way, “No matter what happens, what you deserve or what you don’t deserve, together with God’s mercy (His covenant of love for you) they must in any way pursue you all your life.”
That is also in the same vein that Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Tim. 2:13). Let this renew your mind about who God is to you.
Psalms 89 is a psalm of Ethan that reveals the incomparable God as a faithful God and His covenant to David. You cannot compare God’s act of mercy and faithfulness with any man’s. His acts are holy; different from all other kind.
Whose mercy have you seen that is in the heavens, or faithfulness that has reached the clouds? No one but our holy God. And God has said that His mercy and faithfulness shall be with us. Isn’t that amazing?
Ethan wrote, “He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father… Also I will make him My firstborn…” (Ps. 89:26, 27). What does that mean? Yes we know that this is a Messiahnic prophecy, but what more than that, it is for us! The Yahweh that looks so unapproachable is now our Father and we are His firstborn. The firstborn used here is not talking about a child’s first position in the family, but one preferred to all the rest; the same was used in Exodus 4:22, “… Thus says the Lord: ‘Israel is My son, My firstborn.” You’re God’s special (1 Pet. 2:9).
The judgement of God will fall on anyone who forsake God’s law, breaks His statutes and does not keep His commandment. But nevertheless His mercy will not seize from us nor does His faithfulness fail. And again, Ethan instructed the musical pause, Selah. This is worthy of meditation!
