TOPIC: SONGS OF PRAISE I

BIBLE READING: PSALMS 89:1-18

VERSE FOR MEDITATION: PSALMS 40:10 NKJV

I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your loving-kindness and Your truth form the great assembly.

Last year we said something about songs, that Apostle Paul admonished us to speak to ourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, and that we should sing with grace in our hearts to the Lord. You know, it is after the word of Christ has dwelt in us richly in all wisdom and the Spirit of God has filled our heart that that’s when the former can happen (Col. 3:16; Eph. 5:18, 19).

We dwelt on the word of Christ that has produced in our heart the faithfulness of our God, and we can say assuredly that His Spirit has filled and saturated our hearts. And so, we shall be concluding this journey by speaking to ourselves in Psalms. With this, we title it THE SONGS OF PRAISE IN PSALMS.

The Psalm that we will be dwelling on today and tomorrow is in Psalms 89, the contemplation of the Ethan the Ezrahite; who remembered the covenant of God that was with his master David.

Ethan began this psalm with a dedication of praise in song, focused on the mercies of the Lord. This is a psalm with a lot of trouble, when you read the whole chapter, but the presence of trouble didn’t silent the psalmist’s praise; he sang of God’s mercies. God’s mercies are a covenant of love, and His great loving-kindness of God lasts forever, so the praise of Him should also be sung forever.

It was Spurgeon who said, “We have not one, but many mercies to rejoice in, and should therefore multiply the expressions of our thankfulness.” He added to this by citing from Matthew Henry’s, “We think when we are in trouble we get ease by complaining; but we do more, we get joy, by praising. Let our complaint therefore be turned into thanksgiving.”

Ethan not only experienced the mercies and faithfulness of God; he also wanted to make them known to others. This was for their benefit, that they might also experience God’s faithfulness and mercy. More importantly he wanted to spread the glory and fame of God as broadly as possible.

Then he continued by noting the permanent, enduring character of God’s mercy and faithfulness, and how God had established these things. And as an expression of God’s mercies and faithfulness, he noted the covenant God made with David as described in 2 Samuel 7. There, God promised to build and establish the house of David.

Ethan believed that the wonderful generosity and faithfulness of God in such a promise was worthy of emphasis and meditation, so he instructed the musical pause Selah, before he continued praising God for His faithfulness and might.

Can we pause here and continue tomorrow? Let’s take out time to reflect on God’s mercies and faithfulness, instead of our challenges and give God praise. We’ve seen the faithfulness of God for the past 28 days and He’s worthy of our praise. David sang, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” (Ps. 103:2). Our God is and will forever be faithful!

PRAYER:

O FAITHFUL GOD, I BLESS AND WORSHIP YOU. I MAKE YOUR NAME LARGE WITHIN MY HEART, EVEN AS I PRAISE YOU FOR YOUR UNFAILING LOVING-KINDNESS. THANK YOU FATHER, FOR IN JESUS’ NAME. AMEN!
