He was raised on a family dairy farm.  He had been turned down for membership in a local youth for being "too worldly." He got saved at the age of 16.  He got saved in a revival meetings in Charlotte led by evangelist Mordecai Ham .  He gave his first sermon between the age of 18-19 at Bostwick Baptist Church .  He gave his last sermon, My Hope America at age 95. Out of 195 countries in the world, he had preached in more than 185 countries.  He organised his first crusade at age 28 at Michigan with an attendance of 6000 people.  He had preached the gospel to more people in person than anyone in history of Christianity.  As of 2008, it was estimated that his lifetime audiences topped 2.2 billion.  More than 3.2 million people had responded to the invitation at his crusades to "accept Jesus Christ as their personal saviour." Like Tarzan, he would hang on the trees and gave the popular  Tarzan yell , scaring both horses and drivers. According to his father, that yelling had led him to become a minister.
