TOPIC: THE WILL OF GOD I

BIBLE READING: HEBREWS 10:1-39

VERSE FOR MEDITATION: MATTHEW 6:10 NKJV

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Our Bible reading is such a long reading, but in brief summary, it explains the insufficiency in animal sacrifices and Christ’s death fulfilling God’s will and perfecting us in holiness. And warning us to hold fast to our confession of faith and live by that same faith. But there is something key here that we must not miss out, “… To do Your will, O God.” (Heb. 10:7), and “… after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.” (Heb. 10:36). Now the question we need to ask ourselves is what the will of God is? Because without that understanding, we cannot do His will and eventually receive the promise.

Simply counting the verses where the phrase “will of God” appears, is probably not a sound method for discovering the will of God. God has revealed Himself to us throughout the Bible; His will is expressed from start to finish. But from scripture, we discover that there are two clear and very different meanings for the phrase “will of God”. We have; God’s will of decree or His sovereign will and God’s will of command.

The former is expressed by God’s sovereign control of all that comes to pass. And this is manifested through His promises to humanity. An instance of this will is in Matthew 26:39, where Jesus Christ was subjected to God’s sovereign control to die and redeem humanity.

But the latter is expressed by God’s commands to us. The former is God’s role to play, but the latter is our role to play. For example, Apostle Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, “This is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality.” Here we have a very specific instance of what God commands us: holiness, sanctification, sexual purity. And in 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” There again is a specific aspect of His will of command: Give thanks in all circumstances.

So the will of God mentioned in our Bible reading is God’s will of command that we must do, before we can receive the promises of God. And like we explained earlier, the will of God is best discovered by revelation, and this revelation is found by the studying of the Word (Heb. 10:7), by prayer (Matt. 6:10) and by the leading of the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32).

PRAYER:

LORD HELP ME TO DISCOVER YOUR WILL AND GRANT ME THE GRACE TO OBEY YOU. FOR I ASK THIS IN JESUS NAME. AMEN!
