TOPIC: THE WORKINGS OF GOD IV (JEHOVAH RAPHA)
BIBLE READING: EXODUS 15:22-27
VERSE FOR MEDITATION: EXODUS 15:26 NKJV
And said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals.”
There are hundreds of names used for God, and each of these names reveals to us the workings of God or how God operates.
The name Yahweh, which is God’s eternal name has been expressed in various ways by God Himself. “I am who I am,” is His eternal name to be called what you want Him to be in every of our present situation, that’s why He is “I am.” “God is our… very present help in trouble.” (Ps. 46:1). Yesterday He was, today He is and tomorrow He will be, because “I am” is ever present (Heb. 13:8).
Jehovah was latinised from the Hebrew name, “YHWH,” which means, “to be.” Simply put, it shares the same meaning as Yahweh. “I am” has it had been revealed to us from scriptures shows that all things depend on that name. For instance, “Jehovah Jireh,” which means, “I am who provides” (Gen. 22:14), “Jehovah Shalom,” which means “I am your peace” (Judg. 6:24) or “Jehovah Rapha,” which means “I am who heals” (Ex. 15:26). So everything that exists (E.g. our provision, our peace and healing) came to being because of “I am.”
Today, we will be looking at one of the “I am” dimension of God.
After the exodus of the children of Israel, they praised God for their deliverance. But ahead of them was a test by God, not in the hope that His people would fail, but that they would fear Him, obey Him and not sin (Ex. 15:26, cf. Ex. 20:20). At the end of it all, God taught them to depend on Him as their healer; as the one who makes them whole.
Three days ago, the children of Israel were so extremely grateful to God for how He worked wonders before them. But here they are showing some level of ingratitude, and you may be so quick to judge them. But let’s come in fate with what they actually passed through.
They had six hundred thousand footed men, besides women and children, and much livestock. This is not just a few number of people wandering in a desert, but a whole nation entering a desert. These are tough conditions, and not to find water is a big deal. This was a national crisis, and this was a mere 3 days after they have set out from the Red Sea.
Just imagine finding water after going 3 days without it, you will be super excited. How much more an entire nation in the midst of a national crisis? They would have felt extremely excited and hopeful! But what happened? The water they found was bitter and unfit for consumption. It was in that disappointment that they responded by grumbling against Moses.
Many of us have been in this kind of situation several times and have complained too. But Moses, instead of grumbling with the Israelites, he turned to God in prayer. And just immediately God brought healing to the waters.
Instead of complaining about the challenges that you are facing, talking to the “I am” who is ever present- Our Dependency. The moment Moses turned to the Lord, “I am” showed up as, “the LORD who heals.” Could it be that if they had called on “I am” from day 1, He could have done the impossibilities (Numb. 11:23; Job 42:2; Isa. 59:1; Jer. 32:17; Matt. 19:26; Lk. 1:33). He said, “For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground…” (Isa. 44:3).
At the time of writing this, I can sense in my spirit that this is someone’s word for today. Call on “I am” and He will definitely show up!
PRAYER:
MY FATHER AND MY LORD, MY VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE. YOU’VE DONE IT BEFORE, PLEASE DO IT AGAIN IN MY LIFE. AMEN!
