 THE RHEMA WORD FOR TODAY

(A DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH PREACHER SAM)

TOPIC: THE RICHES OF GOD’S MERCY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT III- LOT

DATE: 19 SEPTEMBER, 2021

BIBLE READING: GENESIS 19: 1-26

VERSE FOR MEDITATION: GENESIS 19:16 NIV

When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them.

Some days ago, we discussed that the effectiveness and power of mercy is based on the strength of a covenant. And that covenants are really powerful when established on the foundation of mercies.

It was the covenant that Abraham had with God that made Lot, his nephew to be shown mercy. This explains why someone will commit a sin and will be shown greater mercy than someone whose sin may seem not humanly grievous. The person who enjoyed greater mercy could most likely have someone in his family who has a covenant with God. Not that Good was trying to be unjust, no. He respects covenant, and covenants invoke His mercy.

In Genesis 18, when Abraham was negotiating with God over the safety of Sodom, he stopped at ten. And God could not find any ten righteous people, he destroyed the territory. Now based on the strength of that negotiation, which was a covenant, the power of mercy could not prevail. But there was another covenant that caused the mercy of God to spare the lives of Lot and his family.

Based on that negotiation, Lot, an inhabitant of that territory should have partaken in that judgement. But mercy prevailed because of his uncle Abraham. Even when Lot was hesitating and deliberating on the decision to take, mercy still prevailed. Now you may be tempted to ask that since we have freewill, why God didn’t allow Lot to decide his action. This isn’t about freewill, but about ignorance (Acts 17:30). God’s Sovereign mercy will always prevail over ignorance. And remember what we discussed about the Sovereign mercy of God? That was why in Apostle Paul’s letter, he wrote, “… I do not want you to be ignorant.” (1 Cor. 12:1).

PRAYER: Great monarch of Zion, on behalf of my family and I, I establish a covenant with You on the foundation of mercy.

DECLARATION: MY FAMILY IS BLESSED BECAUSE MERCY PREVAILS IN MY HOME.
