DAY 15: THE ACT OF GOD’S MERCIES I- TO ISRAEL

 THE RHEMA WORD FOR TODAY

(A DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH PREACHER SAM)

TOPIC: THE ACT OF GOD’S MERCIES I- TO ISRAEL

DATE: 15 SEPTEMBER, 2021

BIBLE READING: PSALMS 136: 10-26

VERSE FOR MEDITATION: PSALMS 118:2 CEV

Let Israel shout, “God is always merciful!”

When we were looking at the topic; the sure mercies of David, we discussed that the reason why the mercies of David was sure was because of the everlasting covenant that God made with him. Covenants are really powerful when established on the foundation of mercies. Mercy is just like a spiritual navigator to the heart of the Father. So when establishing a covenant with God that cannot be reversed, it needs to be done on the foundation of mercy, where God is left with no choice than to fulfil His own part of the covenant (Deut. 7:9, 12; 2Chron. 6:14; Ps. 89:28; Lk. 1:72).

Our Bible reading is a summary of Israel’s deliverance and God’s act of mercies towards her. This act of mercies was possible because of the covenant God had with her father, Abraham. Even when the nation of Israel did what displease the Lord, His mercies still abound.

Many people who have read the Bible without the help of the Holy Spirit believed that God was an angry God in the Old Testament, but He was a cool guy in the New Testament. Never forget that He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8).

God is never an angry God; He does not get mad at you because you sin. The Scripture only unveils to us that God is slow to anger, though He can get angry but He is slow to it. To be slow to anger is different from being angry, to be ‘slow to anger’ explains the grief and longsuffering He exercises before passing out His judgement. A Scripture that supports this (though there are more) is 2 Peter 3:9. But to be angry is to react immediately to every wrong.

The reason for the mis-happenings under the old covenant was because of the law, the consequence of breaking the law was death. Like we have discussed, that the reason why God gave the law was by His act of mercy to reveal the frailty of man and the need for a Saviour. As a matter of fact, the Israelites enjoyed the riches of God’s mercies more than His judgement, because those people were really stiff-necked, and because of His covenant with their father Abraham, His mercies toward them endured.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, cause that the eyes of my understanding shall be enlightened, so that I may behold wondrous things in Your word.

DECLARATION: GOD NEVER CHANGES. HE IS THE SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER.
