DAY 18: THE RICHES OF GOD’S MERCY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT II- CAIN

 THE RHEMA WORD FOR TODAY

(A DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH PREACHER SAM)

TOPIC: THE RICHES OF GOD’S MERCY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT II- CAIN

DATE: 18 SEPTEMBER, 2021

BIBLE READING: GENESIS 4: 1-16

VERSE FOR MEDITATION: GENESIS 4:15 NIV

But the LORD said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

The next person from the scripture that enjoyed the riches of God’s mercy was Cain. Cain after murdering Abel; God’s chosen one, you should expect God getting mad at him, whereas He expressed His mercy towards Him by putting a mark on him to protect him from whoever that would want Cain dead.

When you see anywhere in scripture that God asked a question, it is not an enquiring question, but to point our attention to something important. The question, “Where is Abel your brother?” was a pointer to something important that His blood was crying out for vengeance. But Cain could not discern that God wanted to act in mercy, but he responded very rudely with a question to God. That normally should get God really vexed, but our God is slow to anger because mercy abounds.

The next question God asked, “What have you done?” was a pointer to realisation. It implies that, “Can’t you realise how grievous your sin is?” God was speaking on the basis of mercy, but Cain couldn’t realise that. Even after judgement have been passed, there was no form of regret, he was just so full of himself. Notwithstanding, God’s mercy towards him still abounded. As a matter of fact, it was Cain who left the presence of the Lord.

God’s love and mercy still endured toward this rebel. How much more for you, a child of obedience?

PRAYER: Surely, Your mercy O LORD endures forever. Help me to know You more.

DECLARATION: MY GOD IS ALWAYS SLOW TO ANGER AND ABOUNDS IN MERCY.
