TOPIC: THE CREATION STORY II— THE CONCEPT OF WHO GOD IS (PART TWO)
DATE: 3 SEPTEMBER, 2019
BIBLE READING: GENESIS 1:1-31; 2:1-3
MEDITATION/MEMORY VERSE: PSALM 14:1 (CEV)
Only a fool would say, “There is no God!” People like that are worthless; they are heartless and cruel and never do right.
The fact of God’s existence is so conspicuous, both through creation and through man conscience, that the Bible calls the atheist a ‘fool’ (Ps. 14:1; 53:1). Accordingly, the Bible never attempts to prove the existence from the very beginning (Gen. 1:1). What the Bible does is reveal the nature, character and works of God.
Acts 14:16, 17
In times past, he allowed all peoples to walk in their own ways; yet he did not leave himself without evidence of his nature; because he does good things, giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons, filling you with food and your hearts with happiness
The question of ‘who made God’, is like asking ‘what does brown smell like.’ Brown is a colour, and so it can never be in the category of things that have a smell, so the question itself is flawed. In the same way, God is not in the category of things that are created.
In Genesis 1, we read ‘In the beginning God created…’ The word, ‘beginning,’ in the Hebrew refers to an act of doing that which begins anything. That is, the commencement of an action. So God had existed before anything existed, and through Him, all things came into existence (Jn. 1:1-3; Col. 1:16, 17).
Now, since the Bible reveals the nature and character of God. So by nature, who is God?
God is Spirit (Jn. 4:24). His name also reveals His nature too. God in the Hebrew means ‘Elohim’, and as we saw that yesterday, is the plural form of ‘Eloah,’ which refers to a supreme being. In the Hebrew, one refer to singular, two refers to duo and anything more than two refers to plural. And if in the Hebrew, Elohim is in plural form, that shows that God exists in more than two persons. In Matthew 3, during the baptism of Jesus, we see the display of the Godhead.
Matthew 3:16, 17
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
So, God is one, but He exists as three persons (Jehovah— God the Father, Jehoshua— God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit), just as man is one, but he exists as spirit, soul and body (1 Thess. 5:23).
And by character, God is love (1 Jn. 4:8), just (Acts 17:31), truthful (Jn. 14:6), merciful (Rom. 9:15), and many more, just to mention a few.
