DAY 19: GOD CHOSE SAUL

 THE RHEMA WORD FOR TODAY

(A DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH PREACHER SAM)

TOPIC: GOD CHOSE SAUL

DATE: 19 SEPTEMBER, 2020

BIBLE READING: 1 SAMUEL 10

MEDITATION/MEMORY VERSE: 1 SAMUEL 10:21, 24 (NKJV)

… And Saul the son of Kish was chosen… And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen…”

Our Bible reading only conveys the ordination of Saul as king, the whole story actually began in chapter 8. And the Bible refers to Saul as the people’s choice because the people demanded a king (1 Sam. 8:5). Saul was chosen out of God’s divine plan because it had been God’s agenda to give Israel a king (Deut. 17:14-20). God had intentionally had it in His agenda to raise a king in Israel; of which His Son would emerge from. But the people acted impatiently out of God’s choice and God chose Saul, a Benjamite; whereas God’s choice should be from the tribe of Judah (as we have discussed earlier in our devotional). But does that mean that God never chose Saul to be Israel’s king? No, He did choose Saul for a purpose.

Samuel was given a specific instruction by God to anoint Saul, a Benjamite, as king over Israel (1 Sam. 9:15-17). Even when the Bible says that he was chosen by lot, God directed their choice (1 Sam. 10:20-21; cf. Prov. 16:9, 33). Why did God choose a Benjamite when He planned to establish the throne of David forever (1 Kings 2:45)? The answer is simple, David was still a tender boy when the people acted impatiently out of God’s plan. David had to pass through the wilderness experience and he hadn’t at that time. So God had to choose Saul. It was God in His Sovereignty that work through the heart of Saul to make him to disobey (1 Sam. 13:8-14). Now, we cannot question God’s sovereignty because He remains an Eternal King and Lord (Ps. 113; 75:6-7). And that’s how the law of favour works; a man can work in favour when he is promoted to a higher level of which someone had fallen. Who is man to question His authority?

But notwithstanding, Saul was chosen by God for a purpose. What purpose? To rescue the Israelites from the Philistines- just like the acts of the judges (1 Sam. 9:16; cf. Judg. 2:16). But Saul failed the test of time (1 Sam. 13:13), even when God showed him mercy, he failed to obey God completely (1 Sam. 15). And that’s why God chose a little David to save the Israelites from the Philistines; an assignment meant for Saul (2 Sam.  3:18; cf. 1 Sam. 17). Although he had started his assignment in 1 Samuel 14:16-23, but he failed God and so he didn’t complete his assignment. The controversy in 1 Samuel 13 and 15 will be discussed later on our blog.

Before we bring an end to our discourse, let’s find out why God chose Saul. God chose Saul because of his faithfulness to his father’s business (1 Sam. 9). And whoever that is faithful in little things, will be faithful in large ones (Lk, 16:10). Though along the line, he lost faith in God. I pray that we shall finish well and strong in Jesus’ name.

DECLARATION: I AM CHOSEN BY GOD! I REFUSE THE SPIRIT OF DISOBEDIENCE, UNFAITHFULNESS AND PRIDE FROM MY LIFE! AND I WILL FINISH WELL AND STRONG BY THE MERCIES OF GOD!
