DAY 10: GOD CHOSE JOSEPH

 THE RHEMA WORD FOR TODAY

(A DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH PREACHER SAM)

TOPIC: GOD CHOSE JOSEPH

DATE: 10 SEPTEMBER, 2020

BIBLE READING: GENESIS 50:14-21

MEDITATION/MEMORY VERSE: ROAMNS 8:28 (CEV)

We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose.

Our verse for meditation gives us a better picture of why Joseph was chosen, also when compared with our Bible reading.

The purpose of Joseph is a very unique one. His purpose is different from the purpose of Judah his brother. The purpose of Judah is for him to become the tribe from which the Messiah would emerge from (Gen. 49:8-10). But the purpose of Joseph is to preserve the tribes from starvation and eventually death (Gen. 50:19-20).

Psalms 78:67-68 CEV

Then the Lord decided not to make his home with Joseph’s decendants in Ephraim. Instead he chose the tribe of Judah, and he chose Mount Zion, the place he loves.

The reason Judah was chosen for such purpose is because the path of the Messiah should usually come through the first born. And Ruben the first born, was qualified because he had sex with one of his father’s wives or concubines (Gen. 35:22). The next two, Simeon and Levi, also were disqualified because they slaughtered all the males of Shechem’s family after Shechem had raped their sister, Dinah, making Jacob’s family name a hated name among the Canaanites (Gen. 34:25). And that left Judah, the forth son of Jacob to be chosen.

Just like how Esau sold his birth right to Jacob and became disqualified, that’s exactly what happened to Judah. Though imperfect like his father, Jacob, yet chosen to be the father to the lineage of the Messiah.

But our focus is on Joseph. Why was he chosen to bring deliverance to his household? God chose him because he believed God had chosen him for greatness. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 5:3, ‘If you keep thinking about something, you will dream about it…’ (CEV). So his belief and much thinking about greatness made him to have dreams of him being in a position of leadership over his household (Gen. 37:5-11).

Just like how Apostle Paul had a heart for his people- the Jews, God had to channel his desire to something good. So also with Joseph, he had a heart for his people; to bring deliverance to his household, and so God had to use him to bring deliverance.

But Joseph was bragging about his leadership power, causing strife and jealousy in his household. If God had used him like that, he would have messed up the whole plan of God. That was why God had to allow his elder brothers to sell him to slavery, because every leader is first a servant (Ref. Matt. 20:26). Thereafter, he was thrown into prison, where he had to pass through the Refiner’s fire to come out as a vessel unto honour. (Ref. Mal. 3:3; 2 Tim. 2:20, 21). And after all these processes, he replied his brothers, ‘You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save lives of many people.’ (Gen. 50:20 NLT). Whatever challenge you may be passing through, God is intending all for good.

DECLARATION: ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR MY GOOD! GOD IS INTENDING MY PRESENT SITUATION FOR HIS GOOD!
